Historical Production & Location Reference

Film: All Wet (1924)
Stars: Charley Chase
Studio: Hal Roach Studios
Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • Carson Street (Culver City): The primary residential thoroughfare situated just south of the Hal Roach Studios complex, serving as the setting for the famous mudhole sequence.

Production & Preservation Note: Filmed in the neighborhood immediately adjacent to Hal Roach Studios, All Wet offers an invaluable archival look at early Culver City development. The Our Gang short Dogs of War was filmed on the exact same street a year earlier and the footage in both films captures a raw, developing Southern California residential landscape defined by brand-new homes under construction, unpaved roads, and a complete absence of mature neighborhood trees.

Charley Chase is on his way to the train station when he comes upon a fellow motorist stuck in the mud. Charley graciously helps tow him out but then CHARLEY ends up stuck in the mud. The other motorist tells Charley that he'd like to stay and help, but he's got to get to the train station!

This movie produced by the Hal Roach Studios was filmed in the neighborhood just south of the studio. Like the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Dogs of War which filmed on the same block of Carson Street in 1923, we get a great view of a Culver City neighborhood in its earliest days, with houses under construction and no trees lining the street.

This video provides a great contrast between the earliest days of the this Carson Street neighborhood located just south of the Hal Roach Studios main lot, and how it has evolved 100 years later.
