Historic Lincoln Park in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Lincoln Park in Los Angeles in 1915
In this frame from the movie, we see a Los Angeles park very much as it was over a century ago:
  • The large building in the background (top right) is the 1912 boathouse, still in use today. This building had been allowed to fall into a state of neglect and disrepair and in October 1969, the City of Los Angeles planned to demolish it. Fortunately a plan to renovate and use the building as the base for the non-profit Plaza de la Raza organization was approved by the City a few months later and instead of being demolished, the building underwent a complete renovation.
  • The lake retains its original 1915 footprint within the park. There have been some modifications to the shoreline since Charlie Chaplin filmed here, but the overall footprint of the lake remains the same.
  • The overall configuration of sidewalks and lawn areas remains the same, though there are less trees present today compared to the 1915 view that we see in the movie.
