Will Rogers Memorial Park: A Living Piece of Beverly Hills History

If you are looking for one of the best-preserved historic parks in the Los Angeles area, look no further than Will Rogers Memorial Park located at 9650 Sunset Blvd in Beverly Hills.

From Sunset Park to Hollywood Landmark

Construction on the site began in 1912, and it was officially dedicated in 1915 under its original name, Sunset Park. The grounds held this moniker for nearly four decades until being rededicated in 1952 to honor legendary entertainer Will Rogers.

Today, walking through the grounds feels like stepping back in time. The layout of the public sidewalks and the beautiful central fountain and pond water feature remain mostly unchanged since Charlie Chaplin captured them on film back in 1921.

Iconic Filming Location & Pop Culture History

Over the years, this Beverly Hills oasis has served as a backdrop for major historical and pop-culture moments:

  • Classic Cinema: The park was used as a prominent filming location for the Laurel and Hardy pre-code comedy Pack Up Your Troubles in 1932.
  • Modern Pop Culture: In 1998, the location made global headlines when pop star George Michael was arrested in the park's public restroom, an event he later famously satirized in his music.

The Plot

Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp character visits an upscale golf resort and causes quite a bit of mayhem.

The Filming Locations

The Idle Class was filmed all over the Los Angeles, from Pasadena to Beverly Hills and several locations in between.

The Tramp Arrives - Pasadena

The opening scene of the Tramp arriving on the train was filmed at the Santa Fe train station which was located at approximately the same location as today's Del Mar light-rail station at 260 South Raymond Avenue in Pasadena, California.

The Tramp On A Golf Outing

The golfing scenes were shot next to the Los Angeles river a few miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The overall topography remains more than 100 years later, however the Los Angeles river which was captured in its natural state in the movie, has since been partially encased in concrete here.

The Tramp Relaxing In A Park

The park scene in The Idle Class shows us a part of the Will Rogers Memorial Park that was rarely captured on film. This particular location retains the same sidewalk layout today as it did in 1921!
