The Evolution Of A Filming Location

A scene from the episode Angels On The Street from the TV series Charlie's Angels.

Culver City History: Washington Blvd & The Culver Steps

A dramatic example of urban evolution along the 9300 block of Washington Blvd in Culver City. This legendary block has served as a prominent movie filming location since the early 1920s, appearing in classic silent comedies and TV episodes right up through the 1990s.

In the name of urban renewal, Culver City demolished this entire historic block in 1997, without any redevelopment plans. The block functioned as a parking lot for years. In 2017, construction began on the Culver Steps development, which opened two years later in 2019, transforming a historic filming location into a modern, mixed-use destination.

Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • Downtown Culver City: The historic commercial heart centered around Main Street and Washington Boulevard serves as the gritty undercover backdrop for the street sequences.

Production & Preservation Note: This 1979 footage captures a fascinating mid-transition era for Downtown Culver City, showcasing a raw, weathered aesthetic before its modern revitalization. Strikingly, these exact commercial corridors were heavily utilized fifty years earlier by Laurel and Hardy and other Hal Roach Studios camera crews, offering a rich multi-generational look at the area's architectural and social evolution.

An Abundance Of On-Location Filming!

The full video documentary covering the filming locations of this episode of Charlie's Angels is so big, it's a two parter! The four videos above are quick excerpts from the complete, two part filming locations video.

The Plot

In the Season 4 episode Angels on the Street, the Angels take on a dangerous undercover assignment. The story follows the prim and proper daughter of a local music school owner who is being harassed by "Freddie," a menacing local pimp played by legendary character actor Richard Lynch. To infiltrate the operation, the Angels go undercover as street prostitutes, leading to a shocking twist: the daughter has a secret alter-ego working for Freddie.

Where Was Angels on the Street Filmed?

If you've ever wondered where this specific episode of Charlie's Angels was filmed, the production headed to the downtown core of Culver City, California.

While modern Culver City is a thriving hub, this 1979 footage captures a unique era when the neighborhood had a much rougher, "downhill" aesthetic. This creates a fascinating "then and now" contrast, especially for fans of classic cinema.

A Cinematic Connection: Culver City History

Culver City is a landmark for filming location enthusiasts. Interestingly, the same streets used in this 1979 episode were the same bustling backdrops used fifty years earlier in many Laurel and Hardy movie locations.
