- Iolani Palace: Located at 364 South King Street in downtown Honolulu. The grand exterior, grounds, and distinctive architectural style frames the scene where Major Nelson, Major Healy and Jeannie first meet the legendary King.
Production & Preservation Note: Completed in 1882, the historic Iolani Palace stands as the only official royal palace on United States soil. This 1968 sequence captures the landmark's pristine exterior fabric just as it was becoming a foundational cornerstone of Hawaiian television history. Beyond its appearance in I Dream of Jeannie, the palace's distinctive structural facade is globally recognized as the headquarters building for the original Hawaii Five-O series, maintaining an exceptional degree of architectural integrity and meticulous preservation across more than half a century of active location filming.
The Plot
Major Nelson, Major Healy and Jeannie are touring Honolulu and stop at the Iolani Palace where Major Nelson remarks he wishes he could have met King Kamehameha. So... Jeannie blinks and the King appears!
A Television Icon - From Jeannie to Hawaii Five-O
In this second installment of our filming locations guide for the I Dream of Jeannie episode Battle of Waikiki, we travel to the heart of Honolulu to visit the historic Iolani Palace.
The Iolani Palace is one of the most recognizable filming locations in Hawaii. While it served as a regal backdrop for Jeannie, Major Nelson and Major Healy in 1968, it is perhaps most famous for appearing dozens of times as the headquarters in the classic series Hawaii Five-O. More recently, the palace was featured in the 2009 film Princess Kaiulani.
Preserving the 1960s Aesthetic
Remarkably, the palace has been so beautifully maintained that it looks exactly as it did when it was captured on film over 50 years ago.
