Architectural Note: This specific documentation highlights the fascinating survival of early Hollywood filming backgrounds. The iconic grand mansion and surrounding street geography captured in 1930 continue to offer researchers a pristine spatial footprint of classic Los Angeles architectural wealth.
Laurel and Hardy are hiding out in an unoccupied mansion (the owner has just left for South Africa) when two people come to inquire about renting out the place. Laurel poses as both the butler and maid and Hardy dresses as the owner in an attempt to dissuade them from renting the place. Unfortunately, the owner returns and calls the police!
3500 West Adams Blvd in the West Adams Historic District of Los Angeles is one of the few remaining examples of the many mansions that used to line this historic street. There's some great views of the entrance steps and patio which, as you'll see in this filming locations video, is unchanged from when it was captured on film in 1930. The mansion and grounds are currently the site of the Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens and the staff are well aware of the historical significance their home played in Laurel and Hardy film history. They are exemplary stewards of this historic home.
