Film Title: Hog Wild (1930)

Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • Downtown Culver City: The early outdoor driving sequences feature the vintage commercial streetscapes surrounding the studio, providing a pristine look at the city's early municipal development.

Architectural Note: This early "talkie" offers a remarkable historic look at the shifting landscape of Southern California. The contrast between downtown Culver City's streets and the nascent USC neighborhood captures a fascinating snapshot of regional expansion across the 95 years since production wrapped.

A Tour Of The Los Angeles Area In 1930

Where were Laurel and Hardy movies filmed? In this early Laurel and Hardy "talkie" we see that they filmed at several outdoor locations in and near downtown Culver City, California and at what is today the campus of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The then and now views in this video give us some fascinating views at how each of these areas has evolved in the years since this Laurel and Hardy movie was filmed.

First up is Mr. Hardy's house at 4175 Madison Avenue in Culver City. At the time of filming, this address was a vacant lot and the house we see in the movie was specially constructed just for filming. We do get a glimpse of the house next door at 4179 Madison Avenue, which is still standing today. Our tour of Hog Wild filming locations then and now continues with a look at the 9900 block of Washington Blvd with views of downtown Culver City as it looked at the dawn of the 1930s.

Our filming locations tour wraps up on the campus of the University of Southern California (USC) on the 3400 block of Trousdale Parkway. Back in 1930, it was a regular street, complete with a streetcar line running down the middle, but as you'll see in this filming locations then and now video, the entire street has been converted into a pedestrian-only artery.
