The Evolution Of A Filming Location

Early in the film, Stan stops in front of the apartment building at 610 South Kenmore Avenue, built in 1926 and virtually unchanged today.

Historical Production & Location Reference

Film Title: Love 'Em And Weep (1927)
Comedy Team: Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy
Studio Origin: Hal Roach Studios (Culver City)
Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • Lafayette Square Mansion: The climactic ending of the short was filmed at a remarkably stately residential estate hidden within the historic Lafayette Square neighborhood in Los Angeles.
  • Main Street, Culver City: Early transitional street segments showcase the commercial blocks of downtown Culver City, acting as an expanded backlot for the nearby studio.
  • Preserved Residential Grounds: The featured Lafayette Square estate remains incredibly well-preserved, standing almost completely unchanged alongside its original vintage layout landscaping.

Production Note: This short captures the legendary duo just before they officially cemented their iconic on-screen comedy partnership. Highlighting the historical importance of this location, Hal Roach heavily reused this exact narrative structure four years later, rewriting and tailoring the plot directly for the finalized Laurel and Hardy dynamic in their 1931 short *Chickens Come Home*.

The Plot

This early Laurel and Hardy movie has the comedy team not quite yet a comedy team playing the roles that we normally associate with Laurel and Hardy. The plot was reused and tailored for the Laurel and Hardy characters in 1931 for their movie Chickens Come Home.

The Filming Location Then And Now

The scene shown in this then and now filming location video appears at the end of the film and was filmed at a very "stately home" in the Lafayette Square historic district neighborhood in Los Angeles. As you'll see in this then and now movie location video, the house - and even some of the shrubbery - remains unchanged since Laurel and Hardy filmed here in 1927.
