Historical Production & Location Reference

Film Title: Putting Pants On Philip (1927)
Comedy Team: Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy
Studio Origin: Hal Roach Studios (Culver City)
Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • Main Street, Culver City: The historic commercial core provides the principal backdrop for the film's memorable sidewalk sequences, showcasing early municipal storefront entries and vintage window layouts.
  • Culver Boulevard: Major tracking setups capture the duo stepping out into public street traffic, utilizing the open urban roads directly bordering the studio property.
  • The Iconic Culver Hotel: The film features several scenes giving us a close-up view of the Main Street entrance to the building.

Historical Context Note: This short film stands as a monumental cinema artifact, widely considered by historians to be the very first official Laurel and Hardy picture where they display their definitive comedic personas. Because it relies so heavily on real-world locations in downtown Culver City rather than temporary studio backlot builds, it serves as an invaluable, pristine time capsule of 1927 Southern California street architecture.

The Plot

Mr. Hardy (as J. Piedmont Mumblethunder) is a well-respected citizen in town and his nephew, Philip (Laurel) comes to visit him from Scotland - dressed in a full authentic Scottish kilt. Mr. Mumblethunder decides Philip needs to get a pair of pants and as the two walk the streets, they attract the attention of the local citzenry.

The Filming Locations

Most of this movie was filmed on location in the downtown core of Culver City, California. The historic Culver Hotel is a constant presence throughout the film, whether Laurel and Hardy are standing in front of it, or we see it looming in the background.

Putting Pants On Philip is a great movie location time capsule from 1927.
