Spared From Demolition

In the 1960s, planners of the Interstate 10 / Santa Monica Freeway eliminated the entire block of houses across the street for freeway construction. By pure luck, the planners spared this side of the street and this filming location survives today, looking very much as it did in 1928 when Laurel and Hardy filmed here.

Infrastructure Preservation Note: This specific filming location narrowly escaped complete erasure during the mid-century. During the 1960s construction of the Interstate 10 (Santa Monica) Freeway in Los Angeles, initial drafting paths threatened these exact structures. Had planners routed the final freeway alignment just one block further south, these centenarian homes would have been entirely demolished and buried under 20 feet of dirt embankment. Because the route was finalized a half-block north, these historic locations miraculously survive intact.

The Plot

Laurel and Hardy are once again trying to fool the wives and sneak out to a night on the town. Unfortunately, the town gossip is tracking their every move!

The Filming Location

The movie location used in this Laurel and Hardy film was nearly a victim of the I-10 freeway construction Los Angeles in the 1960s. If the planners had decided to move the freeway just one block to the south, the homes seen in this Laurel and Hardy movie would have been demolished and under 20 feet of the freeway embankment. Fortunately, the planners decided on a route just a half block north of this filming location and these beautiful homes (many over 100 years old now) survive.
