Featured Historical Landmarks:
- LA Arts District Streetscapes: The vintage, gritty industrial corridors near Downtown Los Angeles serve as the primary setting for Madonna and her neighborhood crew.
- The 4th Street Bridge: Filming took place next to, underneath and on top of this historic Los Angeles landmark.
- The 4th Place Bridge: Filming of the initial scene in the video took place underneath this historic Los Angeles landmark.
- 413 Molino Street: The artists studio building.
- The Lost Borderline Building (Demolished): One of the highly prominent structures heavily highlighted throughout the 1984 production has since been lost to urban clearance. It stood at the intersection of East 6th Street and Alameda Avenue.
Production & Preservation Note: Lensed on location in early 1984, this breakout video directed by Mary Lambert captured an invaluable, raw visual history of what has since evolved into the Los Angeles Arts District. While the area's mid-80s landscape was defined by heavily weathered, industrial warehouses and quiet manufacturing corridors, modern commercial gentrification has fundamentally altered the neighborhood's identity. Despite the tragic demolition of a key featured structure, a remarkable percentage of these vintage brick backdrops and street corridors remain structurally intact over forty years later, standing as monumental landmarks from the defining dawn of MTV's pop-culture dominance.
In her iconic 1984 music video for
Borderline,
Madonna and her friends are seen hanging out on the streets of what is now the
Arts District near Downtown Los Angeles.
Remarkably, many of these filming locations remain perfectly preserved and look exactly as they did over 40 years ago. While most of the LA Arts District backdrops are still standing, one prominent building featured throughout the video has sadly been demolished. Explore the history of these classic Madonna locations and see how much of the original 1980s cityscape captured on film in this music video still exists today.
UPDATE: March, 2026 - I have just learned that Madonna's "boyfriend" in this music video, Louie "Louie" Cordero, has just died. He was 63 years old.
