Featured Historical Landmarks:
- Culver City Residential Neighborhood: Filmed at 9634 Farragut Drive and the adjacent alley. The house is still standing and the alley remains as well.
- Garbage Disposal In 1938: There's a scene where Junior is hiding inside what looks like some kind of fireplace structure. This was actually an incinerator and most homes and businesses had them - it was how garbage disposal was dealt with back then!
Production & Preservation Note: Representing the final stretch of the franchise's legendary tenure under producer Hal Roach before the property transfer to MGM, Canned Fishing is a rare for this period of the series in that it filmed on location in a real-world back yard. The house used in the movie at 9634 Farragut Drive was built in 1922 and besides an addition to the rear of the house, it remains virtually the same today as it was in 1938.
In this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie, Spanky and Alfalfa have hatched a plan to get out of going to school by pretending Alfalfa is sick. Since Alfalfa's parents are out of town, Spanky volunteers to stay home from school to look after Alfalfa. Their real plan is to sneak out of the house to go fishing! Spanky's mom recognizes the scheme for what it is and she goes into town to run errands, leaving Spanky and Alfalfa to look after Spanky's younger brother Junior.
This is a rare Little Rascals movie made in the late 1930s that actually filmed many scenes outdoors, on location at a real house. The house, built in 1922, still stands today, though the owners have added an addition in the backyard. But the rest of the house and the alley shown in the final scene are still very much as they were back in 1938.
