Culver City History: From Creek To Massive Storm Sewer

Here's a dramatic example of urban evolution that swept the Los Angeles area in the 1930s.

This is Ballona Creek in Culver City just north of the Higuera Street bridge. Shortly after Fish Hooky was filmed here in 1933, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers converted the entire creek to the concrete lined, deep storm sewer / flood control channel that we see today.

Production & Preservation Note: Released in 1933, Fish Hooky stands as an invaluable record of two major Los Angeles landmarks on the precipice of total erasure. The roller coaster featured on the Venice Amusement Pier was dismantled a mere matter of months following production. Concurrently, the picturesque, unlined banks of Ballona Creek were widened, deepened, and entirely encased in concrete by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shortly thereafter, transforming a rustic fishing hole into a modern flood-control channel.

The Plot

The Little Rascals skip school to go fishing, but their timing is awful because the teacher surprises the class by taking them to the amusement park at the beach!

The Filming Locations

When this film was made in 1933, the two main filming locations used in this movie were on the verge of being lost forever. Specifically, the picturesque creek which served as the filming location for the fishing scenes was widened, deepened and lined in concrete just a few years after filming. And the historic Venice Amusement Pier's roller coaster at the end of the pier was demolished just a few months after it served as the movie location for this film.
