The Transformation Of The Westside Of Los Angeles

From Single Family Homes To A Massive Apartment Building
This dramatic example of the urban evolution of the Westside of Los Angeles shows how the east side of the 3600 block of Overland Avenue has changed over the decades.
It started out as a residential neighborhood with single family homes dating back to the early 1900s as seen in the frame from the movie at the left. In the middle photo from the mid-2010s, only a few of those original homes remained, with small commercial buildings having been introduced into the neighborhood starting in the mid-20th century.
The most recent photo shows the massive apartment building that has now replaced all the original homes and mid-century commercial buildings on the site.

Featured Historical Landmarks:
- West Los Angeles Open Spaces: Preserves exceptional footage of the expansive, undeveloped land and open fields where the Gang flies their bond-concealing kite at today's 3600 block of Overland Avenue.
- Future Beverlywood Neighborhood: The final scenes of Grandma getting a policeman and the mud-puddle ending were filmed within a 200 foot radius of the intersection of South Robertson Blvd and Hillsboro Ave.
Production & Preservation Note: Highly regarded for its emotional depth and outdoor energy, Fly My Kite serves as an incredible visual document of the West side of Los Angeles before the mid-century building boom. The wide-open spaces, unpaved corridors, and rustic vistas that defined the landscape in 1931 stand in stark, dramatic contrast to the densely developed metropolitan layout occupying those exact coordinates today.
One of the most enjoyable of the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie series, this movie has everything: Laughs, action and a great storyline that pits the Gang and Grandma against her mean son-in-law.
This quick preview of the complete then and now filming locations video takes us back to when the west side of Los Angeles was still full of wide open spaces - a big contrast compared to today where every inch of land has been built up.
