Historical Production & Location Reference

Film: Hook and Ladder (1932)
Stars: Our Gang / The Little Rascals (George "Spanky" McFarland, Matthew "Stymie" Beard, Tommy Bond, Dorothy DeBorba, Kendall "Breezy Brisbane" McComas)
Studio: Hal Roach Studios
Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • Motor Avenue Corridor In The Palms Neighborhood Of Los Angeles: The 3300 through 3500 blocks serve as the filming locations for the Gang's makeshift, animal-powered fire department dispatch sequences.
  • 10416 National Blvd, Los Angeles: This was the location of the real fire station. The building actually was a fire station at the time but today has been converted to retail uses.

Production & Preservation Note: Hook and Ladder filmed mostly on location, around the Palms neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles. In 1932, this area maintained a distinct, low-density, small-town atmosphere; a striking historical contrast to the highly dense, fully developed urban residential landscape that occupies these exact coordinates today.

This film, like many of The Little Rascals films, used the Palms neighborhood on the west side of Los Angeles for the filming locations.

You'll see how even in 1932, this area was still relatively undeveloped and had a very small town feel. The movie locations then and now comparisons show just how developed this area has become since 1932.
