Discover the history of a classic Los Angeles filming location with this Then and Now comparison of a hidden alleyway in the Palms neighborhood. Situated between Woodbine Street and Palms Blvd (and bounded by Motor Avenue and Vinton Avenue), this specific L.A. alley has transformed over the decades.
Remarkably, besides the alley geography itself, only one historic landmark remains unchanged: The Palms Elementary School building, which is still clearly visible standing in the distance at the end of the block.

Featured Historical Landmarks:
- Palms Neighborhood Chase Routes: The chase sequence after Stymie recovers the five-dollar bill took place in the alleys on the north and south side of Woodbine Street between Motor Avenue and Vinton Avenue in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.
- Beverlywood Residential Neighborhood: The dog pound scenes were filmed at the Hal Roach Studios ranch, which today is at approximately 9143 Hillsboro Drive and is part of the Beverlywood residential neighborhood.
Production & Preservation Note: A classic entry from the series early 1930s era, The Pooch functions as a brilliant visual time capsule of the Palms community and the future Beverlywood residential neighborhood. Captured entirely on location rather than inside soundstages, the film preserves the distinctively raw, open, and underdeveloped suburban landscape of 1932 West Los Angeles, standing in stark contrast to the dense apartment blocks and commercial development found there today.
The mean dog catcher has Stymie's dog Petey and Stymie needs to come up with $5 by the end of the day to pay for his release. Stymie's prayers are answered as a $5 bill floats down from the sky and lands in front of him.
The money, though, had blown out of a lady's hand as she was standing in front of a store just a short distance away. She summons an officer who then chases Stymie around the neighborhood trying to retrieve the $5 bill. Stymie evades the officer and the movie ends with Stymie and Petey reunited.
In this Quick Preview excerpt from the complete filming locations then and now documentary video for this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie, we see a few of the locations used in the beginning of the chase scene. This particular sequence was filmed in the Palms neighborhood on the west side of Los Angeles. Still very undeveloped in 1932, the area today has been completely built up.
