The Evolution Of A Filming Location

A scene from The Taxi Boys movie Bring 'Em Back A Wife.

Culver City History: Trains On Culver Blvd

Here's a dramatic example of urban evolution in the Los Angeles area.

When Bring 'Em Back A Wife was filmed in 1933, the Pacific Electric Railway had a vast passenger train network all over the area. In many instances the trains ran right down the middle of the streets!

The filming location then and now photo above is a view east on Culver Blvd in downtown Culver City, with the Pacific Electric Railway tracks and electric poles captured on film in 1933, and the same location today.

Historical Production & Location Reference

Film: Bring 'Em Back A Wife (1933)
Director: Del Lord
Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • Downtown Culver City: The primary location, serving as a rich, unintentional time capsule of the city's 1933 streetscape and the Pacific Electric Railway tracks that used to run down the middle of Culver Blvd.
  • Culver Hotel: A central, enduring landmark featured prominently in the background.
  • So. California Telephone Co.: A historic structure that remains a key anchor for identifying the film's precise location.

Production & Preservation Note: The filming of Bring 'Em Back A Wife provides an exceptional window into the architectural landscape of Culver City during the early 1930s. Aside from the Pacific Electric Railway tracks, which have since been removed, the core historical landmarks—including the iconic Culver Hotel—have been beautifully preserved, allowing for direct, real-world comparison to the film’s original location shots.

The Plot

Taxi drivers Billy Gilbert and Ben Blue learn that there's a new rule at the cab company: only married men will be employed there. Both Billy and Ben are single, so Billy comes up with the idea of dressing Ben up as a woman so "she" can be passed off as his wife!

The Filming Locations

Pretty much unknown today, The Taxi Boys series is notable for the extensive amount of location filming incorporated into the movies.

While they didn't realize it at the time, director Del Lord and the film crew have created a perfect time capsule of downtown Culver City, California in 1933. In this filming locations then and now video, we get to see the downtown core including the historic Culver Hotel, the Pacific Electric Railway tracks running down the middle of Culver Blvd and the Southern California Telephone Company building.

With the exception of the Pacific Electric Railway tracks, pretty much everything seen in the movie is still present today.
