Abbott and Costello - Dance With Me, Henry (1956) - Filming Locations

The last movie made by the comedy team of Abbott and Costello and the last stop on this month's Los Angeles filming locations then and now tour.

I've always wanted to cover filming locations of Abbott and Costello movies, as they were a major part of my childhood. Growing up in the New York City area, Sunday mornings at 11:30am on Channel 11 was Abbott and Costello time back in the 1960s and 1970s. It was a tradition in my household to tune in every week.

Unfortunately - from a filming locations perspective - almost all of the team's movies were filmed on the vast Universal Studios lot, with almost zero on location filming. In Dance With Me, Henry though, the team enlisted an independent company and the result is a movie with extensive on location filming.

The story takes place at "Kiddieland" which was a real amusement park (Beverly Park), located on the site of today's massive Beverly Center shopping mall. So that particular filming site landmark is no longer available to photograph as a filming location. However, the location used for Lou's house in the movie was a real-life house, located in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles. This is the same historic Palms neighborhood that appears in dozens of Our Gang / The Little Rascals filming locations captured 20 to 30 years prior.

Due to a zoning change right around the time this movie was filmed, the beautiful single family homes (including Lou's house) that we see in Dance With Me, Henry were on borrowed time. This Quick Preview filming locations then and now video gives us a good sense of what the neighborhood looked like prior to the zoning change and what it has become today: An area where every inch of space is occupied by an apartment building or a paved parking lot.
