The Santa Monica Pier
The Beginning
One of the most popular places to visit in the
Los Angeles area is the landmark
Santa Monica Pier. The original function of the pier was as a support for a sewage pipe, which ran under the pier and discharged the wastewater into the sea at the end of the pier. By 1915, the pier had been widened and Charles Looff had built his carousel (which remains today) and other amusement attractions including a roller coaster to compete with
Abbott Kinney's Venice Beach Amusement Pier a mile down the coast.
Decades of Decline
Ownership of the amusement portion of the pier changed hands over the decades and the popularity of the pier diminished. By 1973 there was a proposal to demolish the pier and put up a bridge that would run out to a man-made resort island. Fortunately, this proposal never materialized. However, the pier continued its slow deterioration.
Rebirth and Popularity Today
In 1983 a powerful storm extensively damaged the pier, destroying the entire west end. Rebuilding took a few years and by 1990 reconstruction had been complete. In 1996, a new Ferris wheel and roller coaster were added to the south side of the pier and this is the configuration that visitors to the pier will experience today.
