The Evolution Of A Filming Location

A scene from the Charley Chase movie His Wooden Wedding.

Culver City History: Culver Blvd & The Culver Steps Filming Locations

Here's a dramatic example of urban evolution along the south side of the 9300 block of Culver Blvd in Culver City. This legendary block has served as a prominent movie filming location since the early 1920s, appearing in classic silent comedies in addition to TV episodes, most notably the Charlie's Angels episode Angels On The Street.

In the 1990s - in the name of urban renewal - Culver City demolished this entire historic block, without any redevelopment plans. The block functioned as a parking lot for years. In 2017, construction began on the Culver Steps development, which opened two years later in 2019, transforming a historic filming location into a modern, mixed-use destination.

Historical Production & Location Reference

Film: His Wooden Wedding (1925)
Stars: Charley Chase, Katherine Grant
Studio: Hal Roach Studios
Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • The Culver Hotel: The iconic, flatiron-style luxury hotel utilized for external street-level shots along the Culver Boulevard side of the property.

Production & Preservation Note: Opened in 1924 by city founder Harry Culver, the historic hotel was just a year old when Charley Chase utilized it for His Wooden Wedding. A favorite, highly accessible architectural asset for Hal Roach Studios production crews, the building has been beautifully restored over the decades, preserving a vital visual link to downtown Culver City's silent era cinematic landscape.

The Plot

Wedding bells are ringing for Charley Chase, however a jealous friend (the best man for the wedding!) gives Charley a note that says that his bride-to-be has a wooden leg!

The Filming Location

A frequent filming location used by Charley Chase (and Laurel and Hardy too) was The Culver Hotel in downtown Culver City, California, and this filming locations then and now video gives us some nice views of the Culver Blvd side of the hotel.

And if you look closely, you'll be able to spot the line of poles that supported the wires for the Pacific Electric Railway line that used to run directly down the middle of Culver Blvd. His Wooden Wedding is an amazing time capsule that shows us a part of the extensive passenger rail service that once covered the entire Los Angeles area.
