Featured Historical Landmarks:
- Culver City Hall (As Courthouse): Located at 9770 Culver Blvd, this historic 1928 Spanish Colonial/Beaux-Arts landmark prominently portrays the "Hall of Justice" courtroom where Stan and Ollie testify against the dangerous criminal, Butch Long.
- The Exterior Facade: The front exterior steps and grand entrance of the building provide a clean framing backdrop during the transitional scenes as the boys exit the courtroom.
- Hal Roach Backlot Proximity: Key segments utilized nearby neighborhood roadways just outside the main studio lot at 8822 Washington Blvd to quickly construct the establishing travel layouts.
Architectural Note: This video tracks a monumental piece of Culver City history. While the original municipal building weathered decades of use across numerous golden-age comedy shorts and mid-century TV sets, it was ultimately demolished in the mid-1990s. Today, a pristine replica of its historic facade stands preserved at the site to honor its cinematic legacy.
Laurel and Hardy testify in court to put away a dangerous criminal. At the sentencing, Mr. Laurel expresses his displeasure that the criminal isn't getting the death penalty ("Aren't you going to hang him?") and the criminal vows to break out of jail to seek vengeance on the duo. Laurel and Hardy plan a quick exit out of town, but true to his word, the convict breaks out of jail and catches up with them!
Historic City Hall Building In Culver City
In this then and now filming location video, we get a great view of the old City Hall building in Culver City. The building lasted into the 1990s and appeared in many movies and TV episodes through the decades. Today, a replica of the facade stands at this movie location. Laurel and Hardy used this location two years earlier in their movie
County Hospital and in 1929, City Hall appears in the
Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie
Small Talk.
