| Film Title: | Men O'War (1929) |
| Comedy Team: | Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy |
| Studio Origin: | Hal Roach Studios (Culver City) |
Historical Preservation Note: This location holds a unique place in transit history. Much like the setting of the later Three Stooges short *Calling All Curs*, Hollenbeck Park was heavily threatened when mid-century planners mapped out the route for the Interstate 5 Freeway. Ultimately, the freeway was designed to slice through a minor corner of the property, leaving the core park configuration and lake footprint remarkably intact and matching what Laurel and Hardy filmed here in 1929.
An early "talkie" from Laurel and Hardy, this film has the boys as sailors on shore leave spending a day in the park. They encounter two lovely young ladies and attempt to treat them to a fun afternoon in the park, with a predictably disastrous outcome!
Like The Three Stooges movie Calling All Curs, the location used in this movie was almost lost when the city was planning the route of the I-5 Freeway. As things turned out, the freeway just slices through a tiny corner of the park used as the filming location and the configuration of the park today very closely matches what Laurel and Hardy captured on film in 1929.
