Featured Historical Landmarks:
- 3570 Motor Avenue, Los Angeles: This building appears in many Hal Roach Studios comedy shorts, but in this movie we get a rare look INSIDE the building.
- Ballona Creek, Culver City: A rare look at Ballona Creek in its natural state underneath the Pacific Electric Railway bridge.
Production & Preservation Note: Beyond its highly unusual and dramatic narrative departure, Dog Heaven provides a stunning physical archive of the historic Palms neighborhood. A side-by-side "Then and Now" analysis reveals that while the commercial building at 3570 Motor Avenue stood for nearly a century, it has been lost to the ongoing development in the area. In addition, the footage shot at Ballona Creek in Culver City provides a fascinating contrast with the Ballona Creek of today, which is a concrete lined flood control channel.
The 1927 silent short
Dog Heaven is perhaps the most unusual entry in the
Our Gang / The Little Rascals series. In a startling departure from their typical antics, the plot of this film actually deals with the heavy topic of suicide — a theme virtually unheard of in an Our Gang comedy.
Historic Palms Neighborhood - A Century of Change
While the story is dark, the on-location filming across the Los Angeles area is a bright spot for historians. This first part of our three-part series of Quick Preview filming locations then and now videos focuses on two historic sites in the
Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles. These specific corners were favorites for Hal Roach Studios productions and appeared in dozens of their 1920s and 1930s movies.
Dramatic "Then and Now" Transformations
In this Quick Preview Video, you can see how much these Palms filming locations have changed. Remarkably, most of these tremendous changes have occurred in just the last ten years, making this "Then and Now" comparison a must-watch for fans of Los Angeles history.
