A Los Angeles Street Frozen In Time In this filming location then and now photo above, we see Charley Chase in front of 4801 Second Avenue (building on the right). This building, along with the homes to the left are still standing and look very much the same today as they did when they were filmed in 1931.

The Plot

Charley Chase and his girlfriend Kitty want to (eventually) get married, but Kitty's mother doesn't approve of Charley, primarily because he is unemployed. Charley applies for a job at a streetcar company and gets the job but there's a hitch - the company only hire married men, thus forcing Charley and Kitty into a "Hasty Marriage."

Matching Up The Filming Locations

There are two movie filming locations shown in this excerpt from the full documentary video: One is in front of the house at 4819 Second Avenue in Los Angeles where Charley jumps on the front of the streetcar. The second filming location is a bit up the street, in front of 4801 Second Avenue.

Both of these filming locations appear almost exactly the same today as they did back in 1931.

Inspiring Laurel and Hardy

As was often the case at the Hal Roach Studios, a filming location used in one of the films was often revisited as a filming location in a later movie and the 4801 Second Avenue location is a perfect example of this practice. The building appears in the final scene of the 1932 Laurel and Hardy movie County Hospital.
