Featured Filming Location Photo Farina High Above The Streets Of Los Angeles

In this one frame from the movie, we see how inventive early filmmakers were at creating illusions: Farina is seen high above downtown Los Angeles. This is true. There is no "rear-projection" and certainly no computer generated imagery which would be used to create this scene today. Farina is actually on the roof of 939 South Broadway, just a few feet above the roof itself. Careful positioning of the camera is what creates this illusion. This is the same location Laurel and Hardy used just two years later in their movie Liberty.

The Plot

Wheezer's father is a boxer and Wheezer is taking after his dad, punching everyone who gets too close. The Gang is put in charge of minding Wheezer while his parents are out running errands. Somehow, Wheezer manages to get away from the Gang and Farina and Joe try to find him and they end up on top of an under construction skyscraper.

Matching Up The Filming Location

The scene in this Quick Preview Filming Location Then and Now Video was filmed on the roof of 939 South Broadway and was one of the most exciting sequences in the series, reminiscent of the Harold Lloyd "thrill" comedies made a few years earlier by the Hal Roach Studios.

This same location was used two years later in the final scene of the Laurel and Hardy comedy Liberty, which you can see here:
