Featured Historical Landmarks:
- Hollenbeck Park: Located in Boyle Heights, this scenic park retains much of its 1920s topography, most notably the lake, however the lush plantings and the charming pedestrian bridge over the lake are gone. This is the same park used as a filming location in the 1929 Laurel and Hardy movie Men O'War.
- Westlake Park (MacArthur Park): Situated near downtown Los Angeles, this park has deteriorated dramatically since Dog Heaven was filmed here. The then and now views in this video provide a stunning chronical of the decline of the park.
Production & Preservation Note: This concluding segment of Dog Heaven utilizes two Los Angeles public parks as filming locations. The footage captures these grand recreational spaces during their prime eras, preserving an indispensable visual record of early twentieth-century civic landscapes before decades of neglect and cultural shifts fundamentally changed their character.
Hollenbeck Park in Boyle Heights
Located in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles, Hollenbeck Park is a nice destination that has retained much of its historic layout going back to the 1920s. This Quick Preview video provides then and now comparisons of the lake and a great look at the bridge that used to span the lake - the same bridge featured in the 1930 Laurel and Hardy movie Men O'War. Westlake Park (Now MacArthur Park) Near Downtown LA
The production also utilized Westlake Park, now known as MacArthur Park. While the park has undergone significant social and structural changes since the 1920s, the "Then and Now" visual history remains a fascinating study of Downtown Los Angeles urban development - and it's downhill trajectory.Note for Explorers: While Hollenbeck Park is a great spot for a visit, we recommend viewing our MacArthur Park filming locations documentary from the safety of your screen due to current conditions at the park.
