Culver City History: Main Street & The Culver Steps Filming Locations

Discover a dramatic example of urban evolution at the historic intersection of Main Street and Washington Blvd in Culver City. This legendary block has served as a prominent movie filming location since the early 1920s, appearing in several classic silent comedies by Laurel and Hardy and Our Gang / The Little Rascals.

In the 1990s, shortly after this specific episode of Hunter was filmed, Culver City underwent a major urban renewal project and demolished the entire historic block. Without immediate redevelopment plans, the site sat as a temporary surface parking lot for years. By the 2010s, a major revitalization project transformed the footprint into the modern Culver Steps, adapting the classic filming location into a vibrant, pedestrian-only plaza and shopping mall.

Historical Production & Location Reference

Episode Title: Scrap Metal (1986) - Part 4
TV Series: Hunter (Season 2)
Studio Origin: Stephen J. Cannell Productions
Director: Michael Preece
Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • The Culver Hotel: Located at 9400 Culver Blvd. The iconic flatiron exterior serves as the immediate backdrop for the episode's climactic, high-stakes shootout.
  • The Culver Steps (Former Adams Hotel Site): Located at 9300 Culver Blvd. The sequence captures the historic Adams Hotel structure directly across the street prior to its later demolition.

Production & Preservation Note: The conclusion of this 1986 narrative arc offers an invaluable visual record of dramatic urban transformations in downtown Culver City. The gun battle showcases a heavily weathered hotel plaza era, capturing the historic Adams Hotel shortly before it was razed. Today, that cleared footprint has been entirely transformed by the massive Culver Steps mixed-use development, presenting one of the most radical architectural evolutions along a streetscape that has hosted Hollywood production units since the silent era.

The last of the four Quick Preview excerpts from the complete filming locations then and now documentary video for this TV episode has Hunter and McCall engaged in a shootout just outside the Culver Hotel in downtown Culver City, California.

A Stunning Urban Renewal Transformation

This filming location has changed tremendously since the episode was filmed in 1986. Located directly across Main Street from the Culver Hotel, the Adams Hotel is prominently featured. This hotel appeared in dozens of movies filmed in the 1920s by Laurel and Hardy, Max Davidson and Our Gang / The Little Rascals. It was demolished in the 1990s and in its place is the massive Culver Steps development. In addition, this block of Main Street is gone, replaced by a pedestrian plaza, as you'll see in this then and now filming locations video.
