A Look Inside a Culver City Landmark

While retro television productions typically filmed interior scenes on a studio soundstage, this particular sequence was shot entirely on location. This production choice gives us an extremely rare look inside the historic, beautifully preserved Culver Hotel in Culver City.

Originally built in 1923 and officially opened in 1924, this landmark destination is a cornerstone of Los Angeles cinematic history. While this rare indoor scene stands out, the building's iconic exterior served as a frequent filming location for classic silent comedies by Laurel and Hardy and Charley Chase, as well as hit 1970s TV series, including Charlie's Angels and Starsky and Hutch.

Historical Production & Location Reference

Episode Title: Scrap Metal (1986) - Part 3
TV Series: Hunter (Season 2)
Studio Origin: Stephen J. Cannell Productions
Director: Michael Preece
Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • The Culver Hotel (Exterior & Lobby): Located at 9400 Culver Blvd. The production utilizes both the flatiron exterior and the interior lobby area to depict a gritty, transient residential hotel.

Production & Preservation Note: This 1986 footage captures the landmark 1924 Culver Hotel during its twilight era as a low-rent apartment block before its comprehensive 21st-century restoration. This legendary structural canvas stands as one of the most prolific filming locations in Southern California, appearing in classic cinema from the day its foundation was poured. It heavily anchored silent slapstick shorts from Hal Roach and Mack Sennett, served as lodging for the cast of The Wizard of Oz, and continues to connect early Hollywood geography directly to late-20th-century television history.

The third Quick Preview excerpt from the complete filming locations then and now documentary video for the episode Scrap Metal from the Hunter TV series takes Hunter to the downtown core of Culver City, California.

A Rare Look INSIDE The Historic Culver Hotel

Two thugs follow Hunter into the (then) seedy Culver Hotel in downtown Culver City. We get a quick glimpse of the outside of the building (which at that time was an apartment building, no doubt with some "hourly" tenants!) and also the INSIDE lobby area of the building.

In the early 2000s, the Culver Hotel was beautifully restored and today is a "must visit" place for anyone interested in TV and movie locations. You can see the hotel in many of the movies and TV episodes on this site going back to 1923 when the hotel was under construction and all the way up to the present day.
