Studio: Hal Roach Studios

Featured Historical Landmarks:
  • First National Bank of Culver City: Built in 1921, this building has appeared in many movies and TV episodes, including movies by The Taxi Boys and TV episodes of the 1970s cop show Starsky and Hutch.
  • Commercial Building at 3570 Motor Avenue: A landmark building in the Palms neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles, this building appeared in many movies as far back as the 1920s and 1930s, including the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Bouncing Babies.

Production & Preservation Note: Both the First National Bank of Culver City and the commercial building at 3570 Motor Avenue are landmark filming locations dating back over a century. While the First National Bank of Culver City building at 9426 Washington Blvd in Culver City is still standing, the commercial building at 3570 Motor Avenue has been replaced by a large apartment building.

The Plot

In these scenes from late in the silent Our Gang / The Little Rascals comedy, Your Own Back Yard, Farina comes into a sizable amount of money and outfits himself in a new wardrobe. The Gang spots him and welcomes him back into the Gang.

Two Landmark Filming Locations

In this Quick Preview video, we get great views of two favorite filming locations of the Hal Roach Studios: The Van Buren Place side of 9426 Washington Blvd in Culver City and the commercial building that used to be located at 3570 Motor Avenue in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Why were these two filming locations seen again and again in Hal Roach Studios comedies of the 1920s and 1930s? Likely because they were both just a few minutes drive from the studio!

While the 9426 Washington Blvd building is still standing, it has seen many tenants come and go over the years. At the time of visiting the site to capture the "now" filming location photo, it was standing vacant.

The commercial building at 3570 Motor Avenue has not been so lucky. In 2018, this building was demolished and, in keeping with the current development trends in the Palms neighborhood, a massive new apartment building has been built on the site.
